[...] is not to say textbooks aren’t useful, and people have found a way to utilize them. The idea of using them as a reference source? Amazing. [...]

Great post! I think text books have come a long way, recently I've found some that are pretty good. Basically you never want to buy any books from a bookstore, like B&E or Borders, they have older shitty language books, and a really small selection. The best books were written and published in Japan such as Understanding Basic Japanese Grammar: very easy explanations TONS of example sentences, it's also pretty thin so you can work through it pretty quickly, when I went through it I only mined 2-3 examples for each grammar point and ended up with a little over 200 sentences from it (and there was still many more examples if I need to go back later). Then the books from Ask Publishing focusing different levels of the JLPT are good http://amzn.to/a2h74a , thin books, simple explanations. It's written in a "course" format with the idea that you do 3-4 grammar points for day over 8 weeks, and every 7th day instead of new material it's got a quiz based on the previous week.

My biggest problem with text books has always been that I can't remember the grammar rules long enough to put them into use, so I put off studying grammar for the time being until my comprehension inproves. Saving Basic Connections book for then too, plan to go through it soon though.
